A Brilliant Start for Future Trainers Club

Yesterday marked something special.

Our first-ever Future Trainers Club launch party took place at the Sussex Pavilion, and what a day it was. Fifteen children and eight families joined us to play, learn, laugh, and connect. Thanks to funding from the Warm Space Fund and support from We Are Fish, every family was fed and cared for.

The room was full of excitement, curiosity, and relief. For some of the children, it was the first time in weeks they’d been out of the house. Seeing them open up, talk, and play was incredible. One parent, Lyndsay, told us, “He had a really great time and can’t wait to come back.” Another added, “This is the longest […] has been out of the house in weeks.” Feedback like that means everything!

Why spaces like this matter

In North East Lincolnshire, around 16.5% of children in schools have special educational needs or disabilities. That’s nearly 4,000 young people who often need more support to learn, socialise, and feel included. Many families tell us how hard it can be to find welcoming spaces where their children can simply be themselves.

That’s what Future Trainers Club aims to change. Our sessions create calm, inclusive spaces where children can take part in something structured but fun. They can join in, take a break, or just be part of a group without pressure.

How the Trading Card Game helps

The Pokémon Trading Card Game isn’t just about collecting or battling. It helps children build confidence and skills in a natural, enjoyable way.

  • It strengthens maths and reading skills as children count damage, read abilities, and plan turns.

  • It teaches strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving.

  • It supports social interaction by encouraging fair play, sharing, and conversation.

  • It builds confidence and resilience, especially when children learn that losing is part of improving.

At the launch, it was clear how powerful that can be. Children swapped cards, explained rules to each other, and proudly showed their collections. Some made friends they’ll be excited to see again next time.

How you can get involved

Future Trainers Club will now run regular sessions at the Sussex Pavilion, and we’d love your support.

You can:

  • Come along with your family to a future session. Everyone is welcome.

  • Donate cards or bulk Pokémon so every child can take part, even if they’re new.

  • Offer support or sponsorship to help us keep the club running and meals provided.

  • Spread the word to schools, friends, and local groups.

If you’d like to join us, donate, or get involved, please get in touch through our website or social channels.

Looking ahead

Yesterday showed what happens when a community comes together for its children. Families felt seen, children felt included, and everyone left smiling.

Thank you to everyone who supported, attended, and believed in what we’re building. This is only the beginning, and we can’t wait to welcome more families in the weeks ahead.
